We were the first company in the country certified to install Tesla Solar Roof, so when Tesla told us that they were ending the Solar Roof program, we felt it more than most. If you've been researching Solar Roof, or you already have one on your home, here's what we know about the Solar Roof update, and what it means for you.

Quick answers for homeowners

Can I still place a new Tesla Solar Roof order? For now, yes! We are still accepting new Solar Roof orders for the remainder of 2026. After Jan 1, 2027, Solar Roof will no longer be offered by Weddle and Sons Roofing for new clients.

Can Weddle & Sons still install my confirmed Solar Roof project? If your project was confirmed in 2026 and is already on our schedule, we intend to complete it based on material availability, permitting, and site conditions. Reach out to our team directly for a project-specific update.

Will Tesla still honor my existing warranty? Yes! Tesla communicated to us that they will keep a sufficient stock available for replacement parts and tiles to honor their warranty agreements with Solar Roof customers.

What if I still want rooftop solar? Conventional panels paired with Powerwall battery storage remain a reliable, widely available alternative that we will continue to offer to our clients.

Is the Powerwall battery discontinued? No, Powerwall is unaffected by this change and continues as a great pair for solar panels to store excess energy or as a standalone option for home backup.

Why is Tesla Solar Roof going away?

Solar Roof has been good for our clients and our company, overall. It provided us the opportunity to expand into new markets, get good at simplifying complicated installations, and allowed us to be part of what we felt was the future of roofing and solar. Although we're saddened to no longer provide this solar option to our clients, we understood, better than most, how complicated rolling out this product was in reality. For starters, this product has always been very expensive.

The cost of a premium roof coupled with solar production came with a high price tag. Solar Roof simply was not financially feasible for most of our clients and the adoption and overall demand for this product didn't bring the costs down enough for more consumers to purchase a Solar Roof.

Solar Roof did something new by creating a premium roof that also generated electricity. Its quality as a roof, its ability to capture energy, and its aesthetics made a strong case for this product to maintain as a winner for years to come. Unfortunately, the reality told a different story as it seems the economics could not keep Solar Roof afloat.

For existing Solar Roof owners

If Solar Roof is already on your roof, a discontinued product line isn't the same thing as a canceled warranty. Tesla's published Solar Roof warranty covers the tiles against defects and weatherization failure for 25 years from installation, along with a separate power-output guarantee: at least 95 percent of rated output at year five, declining no more than half a percent annually after that, which works out to roughly 85 percent retained by year 25. None of that changes because new orders have stopped. Please and reach out to us or Tesla directly if you have questions about ongoing support.

Tesla has communicated to us that they intend to warehouse parts and materials specifically to service their existing Solar Roof clients for years to come.

*Please consult your specific Solar Roof contract to verify warranty information.

Practical alternatives to Tesla Solar Roof

If you missed the window for a Solar Roof order, conventional panels are the most flexible path forward now. Unlike integrated tiles, standard panels mount on top of your existing roofing material, so a future repair means removing and reinstalling the array rather than working around it, and you get more choice in layout and equipment.

Pairing panels with a Tesla Powerwall adds backup power during an outage, something Solar Roof alone never provided either. Grid-tied solar, tile or panel, is required to shut off automatically the moment the grid goes down, a safety rule called anti-islanding meant to protect utility crews working on downed lines. A battery is what actually keeps your home running through that kind of outage, and how much it covers depends on its capacity, your electrical loads, and how the system was sized.
