Is Tesla Solar Roof discontinued? What homeowners need to know

We were the first company in the country certified to install Tesla Solar Roof, so when reports surfaced this month that Tesla has stepped back from the product, we felt it more than most. Here's what's actually known, and what it means for you.

  • Status of new Solar Roof orders
  • What it means for existing warranties
  • Confirmed Weddle & Sons projects
  • Panel and Powerwall alternatives

We were the first company in the country certified to install Tesla Solar Roof, so when reports surfaced this month that Tesla has stepped back from the product, we felt it more than most. If you've been researching Solar Roof, or you already have one on your home, here's what's actually known, and what it means for you.

Quick answers for homeowners

Can I still place a new Tesla Solar Roof order? Not right now. Recent reporting says Tesla has told its installer network that new tiles are no longer available to order, and the company's old Solar Roof page now redirects to its standard panels.

Can Weddle & Sons still install my confirmed Solar Roof project? If your project was confirmed in 2026 and is already on our schedule, we intend to complete it based on material availability, permitting, and site conditions. Reach out to our team directly for a project-specific update.

Will Tesla still honor my existing warranty? Discontinuing new orders doesn't automatically cancel a warranty already in place, but Tesla's published warranty terms don't specifically address what happens to service and support for a discontinued product line. Check your contract, and confirm directly with Tesla or with us.

What if I still want rooftop solar? Conventional panels paired with Powerwall battery storage remain a reliable, widely available alternative.

What changed with Tesla Solar Roof

Solar Roof was built to do two jobs at once: replace your roof and generate power, without the look of a rack-mounted array bolted on top. For homeowners who needed a new roof anyway and didn't want visible panels, that combination was the whole appeal.

Reports describe Tesla pulling back specifically because the tiles were expensive and slow to install at scale, not because the broader solar business is struggling. Nothing in current reporting suggests Tesla is exiting solar altogether, only this one integrated-tile product line.

For existing Solar Roof owners

If Solar Roof is already on your roof, a discontinued product line isn't the same thing as a canceled warranty. Tesla's published Solar Roof warranty covers the tiles against defects and weatherization failure for 25 years from installation, along with a separate power-output guarantee: at least 95 percent of rated output at year five, declining no more than half a percent annually after that, which works out to roughly 85 percent retained by year 25. None of that changes because new orders have stopped. What isn't addressed anywhere in Tesla's warranty documentation is service and parts availability specifically for a discontinued line, so hold onto your original contract and installation records, and reach out to us or Tesla directly if you have questions about ongoing support.

Who else this affects

Homeowners with a confirmed Weddle & Sons project: If your order was confirmed in 2026 and is on our calendar, contact our team for a status update specific to your installation. Timelines still depend on permitting, site conditions, weather, and material allocation.

Homeowners still researching Solar Roof: If you haven't locked in an order, integrated tile roofing is very likely off the table for now. A consultation can help you look at what still fits your property and energy goals.

Homeowners planning an upcoming roof replacement: If your roof is nearing the end of its life, pairing a fresh roof with high-efficiency panels avoids the cost of pulling equipment back off to deal with the roof underneath it later.

Why roof durability still matters here

Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado sit inside what meteorologists call hail alley, the stretch of the country between the Rockies and the Plains that sees more hailstorms than almost anywhere else in the US. Whatever solar hardware ends up on your roof, the roof itself has to hold up first. An assessment before installation should check structural framing, flashing, ventilation, and drainage, since solar equipment is only as reliable as what it's mounted to.

Practical alternatives to Tesla Solar Roof

If you missed the window for a Solar Roof order, conventional panels are the most flexible path forward now. Unlike integrated tiles, standard panels mount on top of your existing roofing material, so a future repair means removing and reinstalling the array rather than working around it, and you get more choice in layout and equipment.

Pairing panels with a Tesla Powerwall adds backup power during an outage, something Solar Roof alone never provided either. Grid-tied solar, tile or panel, is required to shut off automatically the moment the grid goes down, a safety rule called anti-islanding meant to protect utility crews working on downed lines. A battery is what actually keeps your home running through that kind of outage, and how much it covers depends on its capacity, your electrical loads, and how the system was sized.
