Tesla Powershare: Can Your Tesla Back Up Your Home?

Your utility sends a notice about a possible power shutoff. Strong winds are moving through the area, and crews are preparing for conditions that could damage power lines or increase wildfire risk. You have solar panels on the roof and a Tesla in the garage, but you're wondering whether the vehicle can do anything to keep the house running.

It can, if you have a compatible model and the right equipment. Tesla Powershare lets certain vehicles send stored battery power back into your home, giving you another source of electricity when the grid goes down. It can also work alongside a compatible Tesla Powerwall to extend your available backup energy.

For homeowners in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, and Wyoming, that added flexibility can be useful during severe weather, winter storms, and unexpected outages. Here's how Tesla Powershare works, what your home needs, and what to consider before adding it to your energy system.

What Is Tesla Powershare?

Most electric vehicle charging happens in one direction. Your home supplies electricity to the charging equipment, which transfers that power into your vehicle's battery. Tesla Powershare reverses the process, allowing stored energy in a compatible vehicle to flow back out.

This is called bidirectional charging, or vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology when the vehicle supplies electricity to a house.

Powershare has two main uses:

  • Portable power: Depending on the vehicle and equipment, you can use compatible outlets or a Mobile Connector with a Tesla Outlet Adapter to run certain appliances, tools, and other devices.
  • Home backup: With the required equipment installed, your vehicle can supply electricity to your home's electrical system during an outage.

The second option is what makes Powershare particularly interesting for homeowners. Rather than relying entirely on a traditional generator or stationary battery, you can use energy already stored in your vehicle.

Tesla designed the system to detect a grid outage and automatically provide backup power when the home is configured correctly.

Which Tesla Vehicles Support Home Backup?

Vehicle compatibility depends on the model and production details. All Cybertruck trims support Powershare. Tesla has also expanded support to certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

New Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States on or after October 1, 2026, qualify. Some earlier vehicles are compatible, too, but not all.

You can check your vehicle's eligibility through its touchscreen:

  1. Confirm the vehicle has software version 2026.32.6 or later.
  2. Open the vehicle icon on the touchscreen.
  3. Select Software.
  4. Open Additional Vehicle Information.
  5. Find the Powershare Support field. If it says "Enabled," your vehicle is compatible.

There's an important distinction between using Powershare for portable electricity and connecting a vehicle to your home's electrical system. Home backup requires a compatible installation, and the available configurations depend on the vehicle.

What Equipment Does Your Home Need?

The equipment depends on whether you already have a Tesla Powerwall.

If you have a compatible Powerwall 3

A Powerwall 3 system can work with an eligible Cybertruck, Model 3, or Model Y. You'll also need a compatible Tesla Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector.

The Powerwall and Wall Connector must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, registered to the same site, and paired correctly. Tesla Customer Support must also enable the Powershare functionality.

This configuration lets the vehicle supplement the energy stored in your home battery during a long outage.

If you don't have a Powerwall

Cybertruck owners can use Powershare for home backup without a Powerwall. The installation requires:

  • Tesla Cybertruck
  • Powershare Gateway
  • Universal Wall Connector

The Gateway manages the connection between your home and the vehicle. It also helps isolate the house from the utility grid during an outage, allowing the vehicle to supply electricity safely.

A Tesla Backup Switch may be an option in certain installations and can reduce installation costs. The right configuration depends on your existing electrical panel and utility setup.

Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility is listed as coming soon in Tesla's current technical documentation. If you already own one of these systems, confirm availability before planning an installation.

How Much of Your Home Can Powershare Run?

Tesla lists up to 11.5 kW of continuous power for Cybertruck home backup. That's enough to support more than small electronics and a few lights. Depending on the system configuration, Powershare can run larger household equipment, including air conditioners, electric cooking ranges, well pumps, and electric dryers.

You can also choose between whole-home and partial-home backup.

Whole-home backup supplies electricity to a larger portion of your electrical system, potentially including major appliances. Partial-home backup focuses on selected circuits, such as the refrigerator, lighting, internet equipment, and essential outlets.

The best option depends on your household's energy demands and how much backup capacity you want available. A home with electric heating, central air conditioning, or a large well pump will have different needs from one that mainly wants to keep basic appliances running.

Tesla estimates that a Cybertruck with Powershare can provide home backup for more than three days. That estimate assumes an average household uses about 30 kWh per day and the vehicle starts with a 90% charge. Actual runtime depends on your vehicle, battery level, and electricity use.

Can Tesla Powershare Work With Solar Panels?

Yes. Solar energy systems are compatible with Powershare and can help extend backup time during an outage.

Here's how the pieces fit together:

  • Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours.
  • Tesla Powerwall stores energy for use when solar production drops or the grid goes down.
  • Your Tesla vehicle provides additional stored energy through Powershare when connected to the compatible home system.

During an extended outage, solar production can help power your home and replenish stored energy. Your Powerwall carries energy into the evening, while your vehicle provides another source of backup capacity.

That extra flexibility can be valuable when an outage lasts longer than expected. Instead of relying on a single battery, you have more stored energy available to support your household.

Is Tesla Powershare a Good Alternative to a Generator?

Powershare offers several advantages over a conventional standby generator, but the two aren't interchangeable in every situation.

A traditional generator runs on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. As long as you have an adequate fuel supply, it can continue producing electricity. However, generators require maintenance, produce noise, and need a reliable fuel source.

Powershare uses energy stored in your vehicle instead. It operates quietly and doesn't require you to keep a separate fuel supply on hand. If you already own an eligible Tesla, you're also making use of a battery you have for transportation.

The main limitation is available charge. Once the vehicle's stored energy is depleted, you'll need a way to recharge it before it can provide more backup power. Solar can help when the system is configured appropriately, but cloudy weather and high household energy use can affect how much energy is available.

For some homeowners, Powershare and a Powerwall may provide enough backup capacity. Others may prefer a generator or a combination of backup options. The right decision depends on how much electricity your home needs and how long you want to be prepared for an outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Tesla power a house during a power outage?

Yes. A compatible Tesla can provide home backup through Powershare when connected to the required equipment. Cybertruck can provide standalone home backup with a Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector. Compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can extend backup when paired with a supported Powerwall system.

Do I need a Powerwall to use Tesla Powershare?

No, but your vehicle matters. Cybertruck can provide standalone home backup without a Powerwall. Model 3 and Model Y home backup currently requires a compatible Powerwall configuration.

Can Tesla Powershare run central air conditioning?

It may be able to, depending on your home's electrical setup and the air conditioner's power requirements. Tesla lists air conditioners among the larger appliances its home backup system can support. An installer can determine whether your system has enough capacity for your cooling equipment.

How long can a Tesla power a home?

Tesla estimates that Cybertruck can provide more than three days of backup power under average household usage assumptions. Actual runtime depends on the vehicle's charge level, household electricity consumption, and available solar production.

Does Powershare work with existing solar panels?

Yes. Solar energy systems can work with Powershare and help extend backup duration during an outage. The system must be configured correctly to operate safely while disconnected from the utility grid.
